Implementation Guidance
The ICD-10 implementation consists of four phases:
- Phase 1: Implementation plan development and impact assessment (1st quarter 2009 – 2nd quarter 2011)
- Phase 2: Implementation preparation (1st quarter 2011 – 2nd quarter 2013)
- Phase 3: Go-live preparation (1st quarter 2013 – 3rd quarter 2013)
- Phase 4: Post-implementation follow-up (4th quarter 2013 – 4th quarter 2014)
G2N is available to provide assistance for each of these phases, and can help hospitals understand the steps needed to move forward with this multi-step project. For those who have already started, G2N can provide relevant input to keep the project on track.
Key steps in Phase 1 include organizational strategic planning and a detailed impact assessment of all departments, operational processes, documentation processes, clinical documentation, sys- tems, policies/procedures, and coder knowledge base. This phase is called the “planning” stage. In Phase 2, the “doing” stage, work is actually done on every thing identified in the impact assessment.
