Contrary to what some may think, the ICD-10 implementation will impact the entire organization. It is key that all members of the healthcare team understand the breadth of these changes. Awareness should extend to:

• Senior managers, clinical department managers and medical staff

• Quality and compliance teams

• The IT department and all data users

• The HIM department and coding professionals

G2N’s education consists of an overview of format and structural changes, and the impact of those changes. Further, G2N teaches HIM staff and coders to identify a role-based training model that will enable a smooth transition. Since ICD-10 provides much greater specificity, coders will need to possess increased knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology. According to AHIMA guidelines, this awareness education should already be underway, and continue throughout 2012.
